Building Fluency in Math

By Julie Diamond, OCT

When a child achieves fluency in math facts, it signifies their ability to recall answers effortlessly and accurately to basic math equations. This proficiency not only boosts confidence but also reduces anxiety, especially when tackling more complex problems. Math fluency equips students to become more flexible thinkers and adept problem solvers. In this blog, we will explore various strategies and activities to nurture numeracy fluency in children at different grade levels.

1. Building Fluency in Kindergarten & Grade 1:

· For children in these early grades, the focus is on efficiently recalling facts within 5 (for kindergarten) and 10 (for the end of grade 1).

· While grade 1 students are introduced to facts up to 20, fluency expectations are set at up to 10.

· Timed tests can be deferred until the end of grade 2 to allow students the necessary time to build and practice automaticity.

· Use flashcards or engaging videos to enhance subitizing skills, a crucial math skill involving the ability to identify the number of things in a set without counting.

2. Fostering Fluency in Grade 2:

· Students at this stage should fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.

· Mastery of sums of two one-digit numbers from memory is expected by the end of grade 2.

· Before timed or memorization activities, ensure students are familiar with fundamental strategies like doubles, doubles +1, adding 0, making ten, adding 1, and adding 2.

· Engage in interactive card games or dice activities to reinforce addition skills and build on subitizing abilities.

3. Multiplication and Division Mastery in Grade 3:

· Introduce multiplication and division, to memorize facts up to 100 by the end of grade 3.

· Begin with one multiplication number (e.g., 2) and use a timed activity with folded papers labeled 1 to 12.

· Gradually progress to additional multiplication numbers, ensuring 90%+ accuracy for two consecutive days before moving on.

· Explore games like Drill Donuts to practice multiplication or addition of one-digit numbers.

Practical Tips for Consistent Practice:

· Make math practice a daily or nightly routine, integrating questions during everyday activities like grocery shopping, cooking, or family games.

· Identify challenging areas and tailor activities to address specific fluency gaps.

· Keep math conversations positive and enjoyable to foster a love for numerical concepts. Math anxiety is contagious so try to refrain from using negative talk about math.

As a valuable resource, consider seeking the support of an online math tutor or mathematics tutor. Online tutoring platforms offer personalized assistance to reinforce fluency skills, providing math help online tailored to your child's needs. Whether it's an online elementary tutor or a specialized maths teacher online, these professionals can offer targeted guidance in building numeracy fluency.
